Abstract
Canon law and civil law are two independent normative systems that interact and influence each other. Canon law is rooted in religion and ethics, regulating the behavior of the faithful, whereas civil law is secular, focusing on maintaining social order, protecting citizens’ rights, and ensuring justice. The intersection of these two systems is evident in countries where religion plays a significant role, with canon law influencing civil law through ethical values, and civil law regulating religious activities to safeguard the rights of individuals and non-religious organizations. This article examines their relationship through three aspects: similarities and differences, mutual influence, and approaches to harmonizing the two systems. Understanding the role of canon law enables civil law to draw upon the positive values of religion while preserving its independence. Striking a balance between ethics and the rule of law, spirit and secularism, forms the foundation for building a humane, stable, and sustainable society.
