Abstract

Learner engagement is a key determinant of learning achievement, particularly in intensive English language courses (ELICOS). This qualitative study examines the strategies used by ELICOS teachers to enhance international students’ engagement through semi-structured interviews. The findings identify two major groups of strategies: establishing an emotionally safe learning environment and closely monitoring interaction through scaffolded activities. The study provides practical implications for language teaching in intensive and multicultural learning settings.
