Abstract

Developing mathematical problem-solving competence is an important goal of the 2018 General Education Curriculum. This study surveyed 40 teachers and 150 Grade 8 students at several lower secondary schools in Da Nang City to examine the teaching of Algebraic Expressions from a competence-based perspective. The findings show that teachers recognize the importance of mathematical problem-solving competence, but its implementation in classroom practice remains inconsistent. Students still face difficulties in identifying problems, selecting appropriate strategies, applying knowledge to new situations, and generalizing results. Based on these findings, the study proposes three directions: organizing problem situations, supporting students in mobilizing knowledge and selecting problem-solving strategies, and strengthening application and generalization exercises.
