Abstract

In the context of international integration and higher education reform, improving English proficiency among non-English-major students has become an urgent requirement. However, current teaching practices show that English instruction still relies heavily on knowledge transmission, with limited emphasis on learner autonomy and the ability to apply language skills in real situations. This paper clarifies the theoretical foundations of competency- based English teaching, analyzes the current state of English instruction for non-English-major students, and proposes directions and innovative teaching methods aimed at enhancing instructional effectiveness. The recommendations contribute to developing students’ communicative competence and practical English-use skills necessary for academic learning and future professional contexts.
