Abstract

Reading comprehension of detective fiction plays an important role in the grade 9 Vietnamese language and literature curriculum under the General Education Curriculum. However, students may find this genre challenging to understand, making it necessary for teachers to select appropriate instructional methods and reading comprehension strategies. Inferential reading offers several benefits for teaching this genre. Drawing on an analysis of key theoretical issues concerning strategies for comprehending detective fiction, this article proposes and examines a procedure for using inferential reading to teach detective fiction comprehension to grade 9 students. The proposed procedure aims to improve students’ comprehension of narrative texts in school Vietnamese language and literature instruction.
