Abstract

Silence is a universal communicative phenomenon that carries specific cultural meanings within different linguistic communities. In Vietnamese culture, silence is not merely the absence of speech but also a highly nuanced mode of implicit expression. This study examines various manifestations of silence in Vietnamese folk verses and proverbs from pragmatic and cultural perspectives. It aims to elucidate the role of silence as a meaningful implicit device in communication, while concurrently identifying the philosophical and cultural foundations that shape the 'culture of silence' in the daily lives of the Vietnamese people.
