Abstract

This study evaluates the current training practices and the effectiveness of the forehand topspin technique among male students on the table tennis team at Phu Xuyen A High School, Hanoi. An analysis of 10 friendly matches showed that the team’s forehand topspin performance was limited compared with that of Phu Xuyen B High School: shots that enabled players to gain the initiative or score directly accounted for only 22.9%, while errors represented 31.4% and shots that failed to create finishing opportunities accounted for 45.7%. Interviews with 20 experts and coaches identified inappropriate training exercises (100.0%) and a lack of specialized coaching (95.0%) as the principal causes. Drawing on contemporary sports training theory, the study selected 10 advanced specialized exercises, comprising three physical conditioning exercises and seven technical–tactical exercises. All selected exercises received high priority ratings, with total scores of at least 52 out of 60, and were recommended for experimental application.
