Abstract

This study investigates Chinese-language use, workplace communication difficulties, and training needs among employees of Chinese-invested textile and garment enterprises in Vietnam. Data were collected through an online questionnaire from 50 Vietnamese employees at four enterprises in Hưng Yên Province using convenience sampling. The survey assessed the frequency and perceived importance of Chinese-language use, as well as employees’ self-assessed ability to perform 15 occupational communication tasks. The largest gap concerned understanding instructions from Chinese managers. Insufficient professional knowledge and specialized terminology were the most frequently reported difficulties. Regarding training, respondents prioritized listening and speaking skills, workplace-based practice, and in-person classes. The findings indicate that Chinese- language programs for the textile and garment industry should integrate communicative skills, occupational knowledge, and authentic workplace scenarios. Given the small, non-random sample, the results primarily reflect the needs of the surveyed employees.

Keywords: Chinese for specific purposes, Chinese-language needs, textile and garment enterprises, training needs, workplace communication.
