Abstract

Developing mathematical problem-solving competence is one of the key objectives of the 2018 Mathematics General Education Curriculum. The topic of Algebraic Expressions in Grade 8 provides many opportunities for developing this competence through activities involving analysis, transformation, and application of mathematical knowledge. Based on theoretical and practical research, this paper clarifies the theoretical foundations of mathematical problem-solving competence, the cognitive characteristics of Grade 8 students, and the current teaching situation at several lower secondary schools in Da Nang City. On that basis, this paper proposes a pedagogical measure that organizes students to mobilize relevant knowledge in order to formulate problem-solving approaches in teaching Algebraic Expressions. The findings indicate that the proposed measure is feasible and contributes to developing students’ mathematical problem-solving competence, while enhancing their activeness and initiative in learning.
