Abstract
This paper proposes instructional orientations for developing upper primary students’ competence in creative narrative writing to meet the competency-based requirements of Grade 6 entrance assessments used by a number of high-quality lower secondary schools. Drawing on narratology (Genette, Bal, Herman), the study identifies core components of storytelling and techniques for organizing narrative progression. On this basis, it outlines a three- phase instructional process (pre-writing, while-writing, and post-writing) and recommends supporting techniques such as the use of visual prompts, mind maps, and 5W1H questioning. In addition, five principles of creative storytelling are suggested to foster students’ imagination and enrich their expressive abilities.
