Abstract

Station-based teaching is an active instructional approach in which lesson content is organized into learning stations featuring diverse tasks, enabling students to explore, collaborate, and construct knowledge through purposeful learning activities. This approach aligns with the orientation toward developing students’ qualities and competencies under Vietnam’s 2018 General Education Curriculum. It is also well suited to primary-level History and Geography, which emphasizes the development of historical and geographical inquiry competencies, the use of source materials, maps, and diagrams, and the application of acquired knowledge and skills to real- life contexts. This article discusses several theoretical aspects of station-based teaching and proposes a four-step process for its implementation. It also presents an illustrative example of applying this approach to the “Building and Defending Vietnam” content strand in Grade 5 History and Geography. The study provides a practical reference for primary school teachers seeking to apply station-based teaching effectively when designing and organizing learning activities, thereby contributing to improved instructional quality and meeting the requirements of competency-based general education reform.
