Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing significant changes to higher education, including foreign language teaching. In Chinese language instruction, AI has the potential to personalize learning, enhance communicative practice, support the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and assist instructors in creating learning materials and exercises. However, its application also presents challenges related to content accuracy, overreliance on technology, assessment, data security, and the AI competence of instructors and students. Based on an analysis of these opportunities and challenges, this article proposes directions for integrating AI in alignment with educational objectives, strengthening instructors’ pedagogical role, promoting learner autonomy, and ensuring the responsible use of technology.
