Abstract

Translating culture-loaded expressions in audiovisual media presents a major challenge under the technical constraints of streaming services. Drawing on Jan Pedersen’s (2011) framework, this paper employs a qualitative comparative approach to analyze the Vietnamese subtitles of Young Sheldon on Netflix. The results highlight a prevalence of source-oriented strategies (Retention, Direct Translation) for preserving cultural nuance, coupled with the versatile use of target-oriented techniques (Substitution, Generalization) to retain humor and ease viewers' cognitive processing. Ultimately, this study enriches the theoretical framework of professional subtitling and lays the groundwork for future research.
