Abstract

Language plays a crucial role; it is not only a tool for communication but also a mirror reflecting the spiritual life, culture, and value system of a community. Among language units, idioms are special, encapsulating human experience, ways of thinking, and emotions. This article examines the phenomenon of cross-cultural expression of joy through English and Vietnamese idioms. By analyzing and comparing idioms that express joy, the article elucidates the similarities and differences in metaphorical imagery, socio-cultural foundations, and the ways people in these two cultures express the positive emotion of joy. This study contributes to enhancing intercultural awareness in foreign language teaching, learning, and translation.
