Abstract

Vocabulary plays a crucial role in the development of the four language skills and is considered fundamental for young learners in building their communicative competence. This study investigates the effectiveness of gamification in enhancing English vocabulary acquisition among young learners at the Starter level (Pre-A1) in a language center in Hanoi, as well as teachers’ perspectives on the application of this approach in vocabulary instruction. A qualitative research design was employed, with data collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with teachers. The findings indicate that gamification has a positive impact on students’ vocabulary retention, learning motivation, and overall classroom atmosphere. However, to fully maximize its effectiveness, certain challenges need to be addressed, particularly students’ overexcitement and issues related to classroom management. The study offers pedagogical implications and practical recommendations for the effective integration of gamified elements in language teaching contexts.
