Abstract

This article employs historical research, source comparison, and textual analysis to examine Nguyen-dynasty records, travel accounts, French writings, and fieldwork materials in order to reconstruct the history of Nam Ô village. The sources indicate that Hoa Ổ/Hóa Ổ was the name of a village-level administrative unit from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century, whereas Nam Ô was initially associated with facilities along the imperial relay route before gradually emerging as the name of a settlement. They also portray a coastal village with limited agricultural land, closely connected to the Cu De River estuary, commodity exchange networks, and the Hue–Tourane transportation route. Gaps in the available research prevent a definitive determination of when and under what circumstances Nam Ô became the village’s name. By systematizing dispersed sources, the article establishes verifiable historical milestones, reconstructs the village’s historical development and character, and suggests directions for further local historical research.
