Abstract

This study examines current practices in developing first-grade students’ competence in exploring the natural and social environment through experiential learning in the Nature and Society subject. The study involved 75 primary school teachers in Hai Phong City between April and May 2026 and used questionnaires, observations, interviews, and analysis of student work. The findings indicate that students performed well in observing and asking questions (mean score = 2.05) and collecting information (mean score = 2.01), but showed limitations in planning (mean score = 1.79) and drawing conclusions (mean score = 1.76). Experiential learning activities were predominantly classroom-based, with limited regular use of learning spaces beyond the classroom and digital experiences. Based on these findings, the study proposes pedagogical approaches to support more effective development of students’ competence in exploring the natural and social environment.
