Abstract

This article examines the implementation of pacification policies in the mountainous region of Quang Ngai Province under the Nguyen Dynasty through the case of Nguyen Tan (1863–1871). Drawing on historical sources and a logical-historical approach, the study demonstrates that long-term stability in the region resulted not solely from military suppression but from a comprehensive set of measures. These included reorganizing interconnected defense forces, restructuring the Son Phong administrative apparatus, liberalizing trade while regulating taxation, employing local personnel, and winning the confidence of local communities through sincerity and conciliation. The study thereby provides further insight into the Nguyen Dynasty’s governance of frontier regions during the second half of the nineteenth century.
