Abstract
This article examines ten reading practice texts in the Grade 10 literature textbook in the Connecting Knowledge with Life series to assess their potential to develop students’ independent reading competence. The findings indicate that these texts provide opportunities for students to apply previously learned reading strategies, independently select and connect information, and construct, evaluate, and revise their interpretations. On this basis, the article proposes intended learning outcomes, assessment criteria, and an instructional sequence for reading practice designed to progressively strengthen students’ ability to read independently.
