Abstract
Writing is a fundamental language skill and an essential competence for academic and professional success. Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have transformed language learning, with tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Write & Improve (Cambridge) providing instant feedback on grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. These tools promote independent learning and learner autonomy, particularly for non-English-major students who often face difficulties in developing writing skills. This study investigates the effectiveness of AI in enhancing learner autonomy in English writing among 35 non-English-major students at a university in Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests and a questionnaire with in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that AI improves students’ writing performance, and most participants reported increased learner autonomy after using AI-supported writing tools.
